Air souce heat pump

Air source heat pumps extract thermal energy (heat) from the outside air and convert this into heating and hotwater for your home. Air source heat pumps are designed to work in cold temperatures and are suitable for arange of homes, from a small apartment to a large detached home. Air source heat pumps do require electricity to operate, but 75% of the energy required is generated from the outside air, with only 25% being required fromelectricity. This means that 75% of the energy you use will be from a renewable source, which will reduce youremissions and CO2 impact.

The heat pump draws free energy from the air and uses it to heat and cool the building or prepare domestic hot water.


Efficiency Performance:

Heat pump efficiency is determined by its Coefficient of Performance (COP), which measures the amount of heat produced per unit of electricity consumed. Efficiency tends to decrease in extremely cold weather.

To illustrate, in mild temperatures, the COP can reach approximately 4.0. However, when the temperature drops to 0°C, the COP can decrease to around 2.5. On average, typical heat pumps have a seasonal COP variation of about 2.5-2.8. Nevertheless, some heat pump models perform better in mild climates.

When choosing a heat pump, remember that a higher COP indicates greater efficiency and more efficient heat delivery. A COP value of 3 means you receive 3kWh of heat output for every 1kWh of electricity used to operate the pump. Higher COP values indicate relatively more efficient heat delivery.

One of the key advantages of air source heat pumps is their high efficiency. Unlike traditional heating systems that rely on burning fossil fuels, ASHPs do not generate heat but rather move it from one place to another. This process requires significantly less energy, resulting in lower energy consumption and reduced carbon emissions.

Typically, a well-designed ASHP can achieve a COP of 3 to 4, meaning it can produce three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed. This high COP makes air source heat pumps an efficient and cost-effective heating solution.
