Air Source Heat Pump Performance

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in sustainable and energy-efficient heating solutions. One such solution that has gained significant popularity is the air source heat pump. This innovative technology harnesses the ambient heat from the air and converts it into usable energy for heating purposes.


What Are SPF and COP?

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of an air heat pump, there are a few factors that provide insight into how efficiently it heats and how it responds to changes in seasonal temperatures. Essentially, by considering the SPF and COP values, you can understand the limitations of an air source heat pump and make adjustments to suit your particular requirements.


Performance During Different Seasons:

Since air source heat pumps use outside air to heat the inside of a house, their effectiveness is influenced by the changing temperatures throughout the year. To account for this, the performance of heat pumps is measured using a Seasonal Performance Factor (SPF). The SPF indicates the average efficiency of a heat pump over an entire heating season.


To put it simply, the SPF measures the efficiency of a heat pump by calculating the amount of useful heat it generates compared to the electricity it consumes. This electricity consumption includes all the other heating methods used in the overall system, such as underfloor heating.


Since heat pumps are a renewable heating solution, they produce more heat energy than they consume. For example, if the SPF is 3, the system is expected to generate 3 units of heat energy for every unit of electricity used.


According to EU laws, a minimum SPF of 2.5 is required for a heat pump to be eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
