The heat pump draws free energy from the air and uses it to heat and cool the building or prepare domestic hot water.

A domestic air source heat pump is an increasingly popular choice for efficient and sustainable heating of homes. It works by taking the warmth from outside air, transferring it to heat and cool a building’s interior spaces. Heat pumps can be used in both new and existing buildings, using renewable energy to keep them comfortable year-round, while significantly reducing bills and carbon emissions when compared to traditional heating methods. Heat pumps are cost-effective, reliable and simple to maintain, making them ideal for any homeowner looking to add a sustainable energy source to their home.

Q&A on air source heat pump.

Q. Will a heat pump provide all the heat you need in the winter?

A. Heat pumps generally become less effective below ambient temperatures of 35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Below that, it may be necessary to replenish the heat provided by the heat pump.

Q: How expensive are heat pumps?

A: The initial cost of heat pump equipment can be 10-15% more than a unit that uses natural gas or LP Gas for heating, but the difference is minimal compared to the cost of a natural gas or LP Gas service setup.

Q: Do the heat pumps have to exchange heat with the outside air?

A: No. Different models of heat pumps can exchange heat with ground water, making them less susceptible to external air temperatures..However, ground water heat pumps are somewhat more expensive to install.

Q: How do I know if my electric heat is on when I use my heat pump?

A: Most heat pump thermostats have a small light or icon that lights up when the supplemental electric heater is in use.

Q: On really cold days, my heat pump sometimes has steam coming out of it..Why?

A: When this condition occurs, your heat pump is going through a "defrost" cycle. Outdoor coils can freeze over on cold, wet days..When this occurs, the defrost control senses it and automatically initiates a defrost cycle. To perform defrosting, the reverse valve is switched on, and the unit is effectively in cooling mode for the time being..The hot refrigerant gas now flowing through the outdoor coils melts away the ice, and the resulting steam is created by the evaporation of the water..A defrost can last from one to 10 minutes, depending on the unit and conditions..Electric supplemental heaters are automatically activated during this time to temper the indoor air..Expect slightly cooler discharge air during this period.
